Chennai

Issue #168 / Ed. 51

Chennai was my home for nearly 25 years, and it will remain my first home for the rest of my life. It only makes sense to start here. These photos capture a few iconic spots across the city, from Kapaleeswarar Temple to the old TV station.

  • A tall, many-tiered South Indian temple gateway tower covered in colourful sculpted figures, with Tamil lettering on its face, against a grey cloudy sky.
  • A white Gothic-style church seen from the side, with rows of pointed spires, arched windows and a red-tiled roof, under a cloudy sky with palm trees at the bottom.
  • A tall, narrow yellow-ochre tower with a stack of balconies and a lookout platform on top, rising above a curved orange building against a blank white sky.
  • The top of a temple tower packed with brightly painted sculptures in pinks, greens and blues, against a dark, stormy blue sky, with a tree in the corner.
  • A bridge with a row of teal and green arches over still water, with dense trees and a mobile-phone mast behind it.
  • A wide, calm river lined with trees, with apartment blocks and power poles in the hazy distance.
  • A red-brick clock tower with a cream dome, small domed pavilions at the corners and a large clock on its face, against a pale sky.
  • A tall steel-lattice radio tower with platforms and antennas, rising into an overcast grey sky.
  • The red-and-white top of a clock tower with a pointed roof and two clock faces, against a clear blue sky.
