Issue #2657 / Ed. 24

Birds are my favorite subjects to photograph. It is probably the millennial in me but the feeling you get when you capture them staring into the lens is unmatched. Take a look at some of those moments from Kabini National Forest in Karnataka, India.

  • A tall white egret standing on a dead tree stump in a lake and staring straight into the lens, with a dark cormorant beside it and hazy hills behind.
  • A small white egret standing upright on a grassy bank above the water, just behind a large rock.
  • A pale grey and white tern with a black cap and yellow bill, perched on top of a weathered wooden post against a soft blue sky.
  • An osprey perched on a bare dead branch with a scrap of red prey in its talons, staring straight at the camera against a pale sky.
  • Two ducks resting side by side on a grassy bank at the water’s edge, both looking toward the camera.
  • A painted stork standing in shallow water, seen from behind with its head turned to the side, showing its long orange bill and pink-tinged black-and-white feathers.
